Bulkley Valley Child Development Centre Society
Prior to 1981, children with developmental delays and their families were required to travel to Prince George or Terrace for therapy and support services. To address the need for local services, a Steering Committee was established to enlist support from groups and agencies on establishing a Child Development Centre. The Ministry of Human Resources responded with contracts for a “special needs” preschool program and an Infant Development Program. Under the sponsorship of the Bulkley Valley Child Development Society, the Centre opened its doors on November 23, 1981 bringing much needed services to children and families in their communities.
Since then the BVCDC has added Aboriginal Infant Development and Early Intervention Programs which includes Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Family Support Services and Speech & Language Services.
The BV CDC is able to offer a Toy Lending and Resource Library and in 1995 brought to the community the Child Care Resource and Referral Program. Beginning in 1998, the BV CDC contracted with schools throughout the Bulkley Valley to provide Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy services. Other programs that have been added are Complex Developmental Behavioural Conditions Keyworker Program, MOST for Children, Upper Skeena Early Childhood Development Network and soon to open Early Years Centre.
The BV CDC's Main Building is on Poplar Road outside of Smithers as well as three other community based locations in Hazelton, Houston and Smithers. In Hazelton, the BV CDC is located within the Hazelton and Area Early Child Development Services building. In Houston, the BV CDC has office space within the Northern Health Center. In Smithers, the BVCDC's CCRR program now operates out of our new building. Our services are family centered, community-based with outreach to homes, child-care programs in 22 communities from Topley to Kitwanga, Dease Lake and Iskut. The Bulkley Valley Child Development Centre is one of over 30 Child Development Organizations in the Province of B.C. The BV CDC is a member of the B.C. Association of Child Development and Intervention.
